African Pride Meets Street Style: The Dashiki's 2016 Takeover
Updated: Feb 18
It’s 2016, everyone has an iPhone 5 and the African gene activated in everyone.
There was a time when Dashikis became tremendously popular in the Western world. People of all ages put their bright red Dashikis on with some ripped jeans and a snapback hat. At the time that was the ultimate swag.
The Dashiki is a traditional West African garment that originated in West Africa, particularly in countries like Ghana, Nigeria, and other parts of the region.
It was very refreshing to many, especially African people, to see the culture be appreciated at a time where there was much discrimination towards African people. It gave people an opportunity to embrace their culture and influenced others to find out more about their ancestry.
Celebrities who are vividly remembered for wearing the Dashiki are Jhene Aiko, Rihanna, Amber Rose and Zendaya.
This era birthed, #blackisbeautiful #blackqueen #blackking . The Dashiki really brought everyone together, despite diaspora wars. Like yesss let’s combine jollof rice, cornbread and collard greens together ❤️
A personal favourite of how people styled their Dashikis were with, thigh high boots, a chocker and a cross body bag. It ate every single time.
